The EKU Steel Band
The Eastern Kentucky University Steel Band, Directed by Dr. Jason Koontz, has witnessed growth in membership and popularity over the past twelve years. It continues to be one of the primary non-western music performing ensembles in the percussion curriculum at EKU.
Aside from being a popular on-campus performance ensemble, the steel band is also an important outreach vehicle for the EKU Department of Music and is committed to educating students in Kentucky through many off-campus concert and lecture performance presentations each semester.
Although the EKU steel band is open to anyone through audition, it is comprised primarily of music education, music performance, and music industry majors. Goals of the ensemble include performing a wide range of steel band compositions and developing individual and ensemble performance experience. Due to the ensemble serving more of a supplemental role in the overall percussion education at EKU, the focus and intensity of the ensemble programming varies and is dependent on the specific percussion studio focus of a given semester.
The steel band has also received recognition as an outstanding performing group, and has been selected and featured at the 2003 and 2007 Kentucky Music Educators In-Service Conventions in Louisville, KY. Recently the EKU steel band was the featured performing ensemble along with Andy Narell and Liam Teague at the 2008 and 2010 Panorama Caribbean Music Festival in Virginia Beach, Virginia, the 2011 PanFest at Miami University in Oxford, OH., the 2013 Kentucky Music Educators Association In-Service Conference in Louisville, KY., and the PANorama Caribbean Music Festival in Virginia Beach on May 10, 2013.
